Our new snow clearing contractor made quick work of the walks after the first snowfall. He has also positioned sandboxes throughout the Grove, you'll see them beside the path in several locations.

Five delicious stews set the stage for a great Happy Hour evening, November 6. Stew night has replaced Hamburger Friday until it gets warm enough to get the BBQ out again. If you missed this evening, keep tuned because another is planned after the New Year. An evening out with your friends, good conversation, good food, and all for $2.
Winter is coming, and (aside from regular filter replacement) if your furnace needs attention, and who should you call?
Sadly, that's it for Hamburger Fridays for this season. The tools have been put away. There were 33 people at the last evening proving the popularity of George's cooking. At least that's the way George sees it.
That's it for another year, the Walnut Grove Oktoberfest sit down is complete and over. Oktoberfest celebrants everywhere should know this popular event was not overlooked or forgotten here in the Grove. The lights went out late.
Bingo has become a popular diversion on Friday night happy hours. There are two games, normally a full-card and then a game where you sit down if you have the number called. It doesn't take long to decide a winner, and it is all pure luck and a lot of fun. Sharon Gow knows something about luck, she won both games last week and then the final game this week. It costs one dollar to play both games and the prize is a bottle of wine. The small profit goes to help fund social activities.
People are back from the cottage and vacation, and Friday night happy hours are getting busy again. Everyone is welcome. Things get started around 4:30 pm. Bring your own bottle and something to share. There's a collection dish and your 50 cents goes to help social activities. The last happy hour in August amounted to a full meal as there were salads and pork that was left over from the roast earlier in the week. There was also a home-made pea soup. All together it amounted to a good time with plenty of food to enjoy.
Is it that time already? The time has come to start thinking about walkway snow removal, and the cleanup committee includes: Lois Tilden Lambe; Mons Haarbosch; Glenn Outhwaite; Judy Inglis; Ann Kavanaugh; Lorne Palmateer; Ron Shaw; and, Marsha Esford.
BBQ Hamburgers will be available September, 4 at Happy Hour for just $2. Bring your regular treats, this is an optional add-on, just in case you're still hungry. The small profit from hamburger sales will go to support social committee activities. This is planned as a once-a-month activity (first Friday of the month), until it gets too cold. Come and meet your neighbours.

Jean Hutchings chaired this event, and she's pictured above (on the right) with Cam Inglis, and Phyllis Langridge. Phyllis is a past-president of the Community Association.
Chartwell Retirement Homes held its annual Kingston Senior Star Competition on June 26th. There were a total of 10 senior men and women competing... mostly singers. Walnut Grove's own Walter Satov took Second Place for 2009 playing, Malaguena and Saint Louis Blues on his chromatic harmonica.
The lowly fruit fly is a menace in our house at this time of year, and until now there appeared to be no defense. This has changed. A jar with plastic food wrap stretched across the top gets the job done nicely. The wrap is held in place with the rubber band, and you punch a few very small holes in the top with a fork or other sharp object. Put some cherries or other food the flies like in the jar, and you're done. The flies will find their way in, they will have difficulty finding their way out. Thanks to Judy for finding this on the Internet.
What's this all about? Ken Baker former BBQ staff cook from previous year stops by to offer some tips to George Hepburn (apprentice) and Garry McFee (senior cook) at this year's July BBQ.
